He spent his final days in the death row cell known as "the dungeon". Clough was hanged in 1833. Shortly after his death, guards and inmates heard moaning and the sounds of rattling chains from the empty cell. Victorian splendor distinguishes the Crown Point Sheriff's house, under renovation by the Old Sheriff's House Foundation of Indiana. A large jail building was built onto the back of the Sheriff's house in 1926. The large chimney belongs to the jailhouse. The building is best known as the jail from which the notorious John Dillinger escaped in 1934.

After nearly 50 years as an active Jail, it's doors were closed, but not everyone has moved on. People have reported many apparitions in photographs, and some have even heard voices and footsteps when no one else was around. Check out hauntedhouses.com for more information.

After the Penitentiary closed in 1973, the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.(from their website)
